The Ten Commandments
Third Commandment
Honoring the Sabbath
(Time with God)
Review
1st Commandment
“You shall have no other gods before me.”
2nd Commandment
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain…”
3rd Commandment
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day [Sat.] is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested [rested in so far as he was satisfied] on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
-Exodus 20
Time is Valuable.
Q: Would more or less hours during the day
be helpful to you?
It is not healthy, nor is it efficient to fill EVERY minute of our day with activity.
“There is no present like Time.”
Q: Where is most of your time spent?
The LETTER of the Law
vs
The SPIRIT of the Law
The LETTER of the Sabbath Law
1. (No longer required in the NT on Saturday)
2. (It is the only one of 10 Commandments
NOT mentioned in the NT)
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
“One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” 25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” 27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
–Mark 2:23-28
The SPIRIT of the Sabbath Law
1. (Devotion to God is to be done daily)
(Sunday/Resurrection Day worship)
2. (Proper Rest is always wise)
We NEED to rest/refresh/recreate!
Reasons we may not be Devoted to God as we should
1.Sin/Shame/Guilt/Pride
2.Denial – we think we are.
3.Don’t need Him.
4.We don’t spiritually want to because we think that it is too hard to:
Read Bible, Figure God out, etc
Reasons we may not be Resting as we should
1.Sin (We don’t see the value and necessity of rest.)
2. Work-a-holism and its perceived virtue
(I don’t have time to take time off, I can’t financially afford to, “I’m not lazy”)
3. Denial – We may think we are balanced and properly rested.
4. It is too hard to know the right balance.
BalancING
5. Bad time management.
6. Our sinful nature takes over and we waste time:
Sinful Indulgences
Meaningless Activities
Compulsive Habits
A Helpful Way to View the Sabbath
The very first Sabbath ever was also the first FULL DAY of life for both Adam & Eve.
“Take” Time [We can NOT “Make” time]
“Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit… 22 reject every kind of evil. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.”
-1 Thessalonians 5:16-23
