The Ten Commandments

Introduction

“God is Faithful”

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”

[He can’t be anything else than what he is]

-2 Timothy 2:13

Faithful = Absolutely dependable.

They are given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai.

[After Red Sea]

They are a guide for human behavior.

Basis for ethical and legal systems in many societies.

(Judeo-Christian Ethics)

Obeying them does not earn forgiveness.

They are Law & not Gospel.

Jesus’ Death & Resurrection are the Gospel

There are two different ways that people number the Ten Commandments

Exodus 20

“You shall have no other gods [1 – Everyone numbers this #1] before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image [2 – Not everyone numbers this #2] in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, [2 – Luther numbered this #2 and then divided up the command about not coveting - 10th commandment - into two parts] 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. [Inanimate objects - Things that are not alive]

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” [Animate objects – Things that are alive]

Some basic things to know about the 10 Commandments:

They are good.

He has shown you, [Personally Demonstrated] O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

- Micah 6:8

God does these three.

He is JUST,

He is Merciful,

He SEES HIMSELF ACCURATELY. (Humble)

God is Faithful

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”

-2 Timothy 2:13

Q: How has He always been faithful?

Q: How have I felt his faithfulness?

Q: When have I not felt his faithfulness?

Q: Why don’t we always FEEL God’s faithfulness.

(We walk by faith and not by sight.)

A: Because we are called to exercise faith and utilize the “Fruit of the Spirit”

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness Gentleness, Self-Control

God has chosen to reveal Himself to us.

His attributes.

Some Attributes of God

1.Unchanging.

God “is the same yesterday and today and forever

-Hebrews 13:8

2.Holy.

God is separate.

He cannot tolerate sin.

3.Just.

God’s just nature demands punishment for sin. Exodus 34:7 says,

“He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.”

[Jesus on the Cross]

4.Loving, Merciful & Graciously Forgiving

God’s love for us is not a superficial emotion; it’s a profound, unconditional love that manifests in instruction, correction, and discipline.

“By grace through faith, not by works…”

-Ephesians 2:8,9

5.Eternal.

“I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you”

-Hebrews 13:5

6. Omnipotent.

God is all-powerful. He can suspend the laws of nature to accomplish His purpose. However, God cannot do anything that is contrary to His nature. For example, God can’t lie (Titus 1:2)

7. Omniscient. [All-knowing]

He knows the future, and He knows your future.

8.Omnipresent.

God is ever-present and working in His creation.

9. Transcendent.

Even though God is in His creation, He is distinct from His creation.

10. Sovereign.

God is the boss. What God wants done gets done.

“I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

Job 42:2

Conclusion

He has shown you, [Personally Demonstrated] O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

- Micah 6:8

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”

-2 Timothy 2:13
