Prayer

Part 9

Part 2

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.”

-Matthew 6

THE NATURE OF TEMPTATION

“Lead us not into Temptation”

Part 2

[Visual examples of temptation]

TEMPTATION IS “NOT” SIN

It is simply temptation or enticement TO SIN.

We can be tempted in any way about anything at any time.

THREE SOURCES OF TEMPTATION

The World

The Flesh

The Devil

The World – Anything that we are exposed to in the world around us that is either neutral towards God or opposed to Him. [Neutral = Indifferent, Whatever, Who Cares?]

The Flesh – The natural sin that is within us. (Original Sin)

[Our sinful passions, inclinations or tendencies]

The Devil -- A real, personal enemy, a fallen angel, Father of Lies, etc.

“Did God really say…”

-Genesis 3:1

SATAN’S THREE TEMPTATIONS FOR JESUS

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”

Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.

At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

-Matthew 3:13-17

THEN Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If [Since] you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

Matthew 4:1-11

FIRST TEMPTATION

(Physical Needs – Take care of yourself.)

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[Deut. 8:3]”

SECOND TEMPTATION

(Test the promises of God, the Father)

5 THEN the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said,

“throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,

and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[Psalm 91:11,12]”

7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[Det. 6:16]”

THIRD TEMPTATION

(Cut corners in life)

8 AGAIN, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

THREE HELPFUL VERSES ABOUT TEMPTATION

1. “ When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone…”

- James 1:13,14

2. “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

- 1 Corinthians 10:13

3. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

-Hebrews 2:9-18

Temptation is a trap by Satan to get us to buy in to his lies, robbing ourselves of the best that

God has to offer.

God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

- 1 Corinthians 10:13
